A Story On Neyyar Wild Life

Neyyar Wildlife

Trivandrum, Kerala, India

Discover!!! Yourself in Wild,

We are sure; you will not enjoy this …. But will experience some thing …

Let me tell you the story, but before you enter into this story.

Be an animal and be ready to get sweat and tired,

We are taking you to a forest, which is been spoiled a bit by the human beings, they are controlling the natural water flow of this forest by building a Dam,

We are very sorry to tell you that, you cannot even enjoy your bath inside the dam, you don’t feel comfortable when so many eyes stare at you, and those eyes may come closer to you on the water, more than 500 crocodiles in the dam won’t be so much friendly with you.

But, don’t loose hope, you are allowed to do boating in the dam, and go to the other side of the forest to watch Lions, you are lucky, at least you have a covered vehicle for traveling inside this protected area and meet the King’s family.

Come out of this area, come to the other side, to take ride on the biggest moving vehicle in the world, do elephant ride in the forest, on the way back stop your car to visit some Deer, we want them to have a long life so they are inside the fencing.

Sun is saying good bye, lets find out some place to sleep, get into the car and drive to Kaali para (Kaali Rock), almost reached by road, get out of the car. We think we need to walk now, climb this hill by foot, for almost one kilometer; you got a road to walk (even if you don’t agree, it’s a road).

Reached top, you are sweating & gasping, and you look tired, see the huge rock on top, and you can see some cottages here in front of the Rock, entered into the property and you see the rest of the forest from here, you can see the dam in front of you down to your eyesight.

It’s dark in the night, now we need to sleep, let’s have dinner before that, thank god!! This resort has a restaurant and a cook,

Got into the room and feels like Kerala, oh! Sorry we are in Kerala only, we want to sleep, pleaseee let me sleep,

mmmm…. Zzzzz…

Oh!, got up in the night, what is that sound, I can hear it, is it Lions…….. Yes it is, its lions roaring.

Woke up in the morning (if you had sleep), came out of the room and sat down on the easy chair with a cup of coffee and looked down to the valleys, only one thing to disturb you is the big construction called Neyyar Dam, it makes a wall down the valleys, but you might love watching that.

Don’t want to stop here? Then start your rock climbing on ‘Kaali Para’ and visit a small ‘Durga temple’ on top, see the whole world from here…

…. And the Neyyar Begins here …..

FACT & FIGURES OF NEYYAR

Neyyar sanctuary Nestled in the south-east corner of the Western Ghats, the Neyyar sanctuary is the drainage basin of the Neyyar river and its tributaries-Mullayar and Kallar. Although it was declared a sanctuary way back in 1958, not much was done for wildlife conservation. However, a separate wildlife wing was set up in 1985 and as a result, conservation efforts have gathered momentum. The Neyyar sanctuary with an area of over 12,000 ha has substantial natural vegetation cover. The diversity of its flora makes the sanctuary an ideal gene pool preserve. The towering peak of Agastiarmalai at an elevation of 1868m. is the most important landmark. The Sanctuary stretches for the Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve of Tamil Nadu in the east of Neyyattinkara taluk in the south. The Neyyar river and its tributaries flow along the entire stretch of the preserve. The irrigation dam at Neyyar receives water from the Neyyar river which originates from Agastiar Peak. The administrative complex of Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary is situates about 1 km west of Neyyar dam but outside the sanctuary limits, and houses an information centre, a crocodile farm, office, staff quarters, a rest house and a youth hostel. Tourists can visit the Lion Safari Park, Crocodile Farm and take a ride in the lake.Thiruvananthapuram, the capital city, is only 30 kms away and is connected by good roads. The Kerala Tourism Development Corporation arranges conducted tours to the Neyyar sanctuary. The Agastiarmalai region supports a wide variety of plant species including medicinal plants. There are at least 109 rare plants in the area. Trekking to Agastiar Peak, particularly during summer, is a popular pastime of youngsters. However, unregulated trekking is restricted.
